Each year the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO Services) publishes the Annual Report and Accounts summarising their performance analysis and highlights from the year, as well as sustainability and accountability reporting.

We’re thrilled to have worked collaboratively with FCDO Services and to have our work included in this year’s report, showcasing how we helped enable FCDO to execute their first ever Digital Sensitivity Review and transfer using state-of-the-art digital solutions.

Government departments are obliged under the Public Records Act to transfer historical public records selected for permanent preservation to The National Archives (TNA), by an agreed timescale.
From the 1990s, FCDO files were stored in both a digital and paper format. These particular digital records were created on the FCDO’s original IT system in 1992, and thanks to our team at SVGC Digital these files are now available through TNA’s online catalogue on the Internet.

This was a landmark moment for The Sensitivity Review Service as the first fully digitised transfer. The ground-breaking work by our team enabled the use of innovative AI technology to speed the process up for FCDO Services customers. For the full story of this exciting and large-scale challenge, read the full case study here.

“Our Digital Sensitivity Review work, to archive official government records, continues to gather significant pace across Whitehall and we are in an excellent position to deliver this work as an enduring cross-government service. In November, the team achieved a significant milestone in the first ever transfer of a digital artefact to The National Archives.” FCDO Services’ CEO Mike Astell

To demonstrate the complex nature of this particular project we created an infographic that tells the story of our work with FCDO Services. This piece of design work, created by Ellen Green, features within the report on page 19. View or download the full infographic here.
