At SVGC we’re proud to be a small business formed of experienced, highly qualified people operating on a national platform.

Nick Doughty is a Principal Systems Engineer (Space) at SVGC, specialising in mission analysis, modelling and military space systems. He provides expert consultation and evidence-based recommendations to support critical decision-making across the UK’s space and defence domains.

What’s your role at SVGC and what’s your background?

At SVGC, my role is to apply my expertise in space systems engineering, mission analysis and modelling to deliver high-quality client consultation and support within the space domain, particularly within military space. My background includes working on complex space programmes where evidence-led analysis underpins strategic decisions.

What are your ‘must haves’ to start the working day?

As a father of two children under five, my day often starts earlier than planned with a lot of caffeine and some quality time with the little ones, alongside the daily battle of getting them, and myself, ready for the day ahead.

What’s your proudest work achievement to date?

Before joining SVGC, I was responsible for the mission modelling and system optimisation of a medium-lift orbital-class launch vehicle for a major European Space Agency contract framework, which contributed to winning that framework.

At SVGC, I’m proud that our team has helped shape significant decision-making within the UK military space ecosystem, with far-reaching impacts.

What do you love most about what you do?

The space domain is complex, highly constrained, often hostile and operationally unintuitive. I find real satisfaction in tackling the challenges that come from solving problems in such a demanding environment.

What does your typical working day look like?

I’m currently primarily client-facing, so a typical day involves arriving on site, engaging with key stakeholders, gathering the latest status across areas of interest, and developing courses of action and evidence-based recommendations for decision-makers.

When you hit a wall workwise, what do you do?

As a space enthusiast, if I hit a mental block, I’ll take a short break to catch up on interesting news or updates from the space domain outside of the immediate task. That usually helps reset my thinking and often sparks new ideas for tackling the problem at hand.
